To parse adverbs:

Tell that it is an adverb and why.
Tell what it modifies.

Parse the adverbs in the following sentence:

The sun shines brightly.

Brightly is an adverb because it modifies the meaning of the verb.
It modifies the verb shines.


Parse the adverbs in the following sentence:

Mary writes more elegantly than her brother.

More elegantly is an adverb because it modifies the meaning of the verb.
It modifies the verb writes.

Parse the adverbs in the following sentence:

I will go whenever you wish.

Whenever is a conjunctive adverb of time.
As an adverb it modifies both will go and wish.
As a connective, it connects the subordinate clause whenever you wish to will go.
