Samuel Greene originally wrote this grammar book in the late 1860s. This was about the time that Noah Webster was working on a dictionary of American English. Greene’s work and this revision of his work stress the vocabulary for talking about the American English language and ways that English language sentences can be read, analyzed,  and understood. Learning to write effective English can be greatly helped by knowing the vocabulary used by English language scholars, and by reading and working with powerfully written English sentences.

Greene’s text has been updated to a certain extent. Topics that seemed important in the 1860s but are considered much less important for today’s writers have been left out. Places where the original text was not clear have been edited and modified. The original content and emphasis remain.
